Frequently Asked Questions
Does an invitation letter guarantee a Canadian visa?
No. An invitation letter is a supporting document only. The visa officer makes the final decision based on the full application. A strong invitation letter improves the application but does not guarantee approval.
Does the invitation letter need to be notarized?
IRCC does not require notarization for invitation letters. A signed letter from the host is sufficient. However, some visa applicants choose to have it notarized to strengthen their application.
What is the host's responsibility when writing an invitation letter?
The host is confirming that the visitor has a legitimate reason to visit Canada and that the information provided is accurate. Providing false information in an invitation letter can have serious legal consequences.
Can I invite someone who is not a family member?
Yes. You can invite friends, colleagues, or any foreign national to Canada. Simply indicate the correct relationship (e.g. friend, colleague) in the letter.
Should the visitor stay with me for the letter to be valid?
Not necessarily. If the visitor will stay in a hotel, you can mention that in the letter. However, if they will stay with you, confirming this adds credibility to the invitation.
